This two-day course prepares certified Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I personnel to serve as a Live Fire Instructor under NFPA 1400. Students will build on their firefighting and instructor foundations to develop the specific knowledge and skills required to safely supervise students during live fire training evolutions, including pre-burn preparation, fire behavior recognition, functional crew supervision, and post-burn evaluation.

Day one is delivered in the classroom and covers live fire training program requirements, roles and responsibilities of the instructor, pre-burn planning and inspection procedures, PPE and SCBA inspection standards, fire behavior indicators (flow path, flashover, rollover, backdraft), instructor-to-student ratios, and safety and accountability procedures required under NFPA 1400.

Day two moves to the live burn ground, where students apply classroom knowledge in a supervised, hands-on live fire training evolution. Students will practice pre-burn inspections, functional crew supervision, real-time monitoring of fire conditions and student performance, and post-burn briefing and evaluation techniques under the guidance of a qualified Instructor in Charge.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a Fire Fighter I and II Certification
  • Must possess a Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I Certification
  • Full structural PPE with SCBA (each course day; students without complete, serviceable PPE and SCBA will not be permitted to participate in live fire evolutions)

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Inspect participant PPE and SCBA for serviceability prior to a live fire evolution
  • Recognize and predict fire growth stages, flow path, flashover, rollover, and backdraft conditions during live training
  • Supervise a functional crew during a live fire evolution while maintaining participant accountability
  • Apply appropriate instructor-to-student ratios and safety monitoring practices
  • Support pre-burn briefings and contribute to post-burn debrief and evaluation
