    Prerequisites: Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, and Five years fire service experience minimum required. Non-officers are encouraged to apply but preference will be given to currently serving Fire Officers.

    This class focuses on the same key areas for the officers identified in the first awareness course, but “takes them up a notch”. Rather than being focused on the company level officer, it is focused on the station or multiple company officer.

    "Training Officers on Employment Practices, Liability Risks and Strengthening Communications and Interpersonal Working Relationships"

    Training will focus on the unique role and responsibilities of supervisors of all levels in the fire service, particularly pertaining to employment practices liability risks, such as harassment, discrimination and retaliation prevention. Additionally, tools and methodologies will be explored for supervisors to best navigate interpersonal working relationship challenges, such as resolving conflict; engaging in difficult conversations; and positively managing, coaching, counseling, and motivating subordinates.

    OUR PRESENTER

    Mike McCall, J.D.

    Mike McCall, J.D. is President of MJ Consulting and has provided personnel risk management training and consultation to over 700 emergency services organizations in the United States and Canada over the last 28 years. Mike specializes in developing programs addressing work-related harassment, discrimination, retaliation, anti-bias, conflict management, and interpersonal working relationship challenges. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and conventions, such as for the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs (MAFC), Texas Fire Chiefs Association (TFCA), Texas State Association of Fire and Emergency Districts (SAFE-D), and Fire Rescue International (FRI). He is a published author of the “Employment Practices Resource Manual”, a risk management guide for emergency services agencies, as well as many industry newsletter articles. Mike developed an anti-bias training program in 2021 titled “Differences Without Division” for implementation nationwide for the fire service.

    In 2011, Mike co-founded PFA Consulting, Protection For All – a human relations risk management firm for colleges, universities and athletics organizations to address harassment, discrimination, retaliation, emotionally abusive coaching, bullying, hazing, physical misconduct, sexual misconduct, and other wrongdoing. Over the last 13 years, he has personally trained and consulted with thousands of intercollegiate student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff; the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC); and professional sports franchises (e.g., Houston Texans). Mike has trained and/or provided risk assessments for the following universities’ and colleges’ athletics departments: Alabama, Anderson, Auburn, Cincinnati, Clemson, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Louisville, LSU, Marshall, Miami (FL), Minnesota, Montreat, New Mexico, Northwestern, Our Lady of the Lake, Purdue, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Stephen F.
